Passkeys: a simpler, safer way to sign in
Passwords out, Passkeys in - the smarter, easier and more secure way of logging in.
Passwords create headaches!
Passwords have long been the weakest link in online security. They are forgotten, reused, written down, and often stolen through phishing attacks.
Passkey changes that! By removing the hassle of traditional logins while offering far stronger protection against today’s cyber threats.
What is “passkey” [~pass-key]
A passkey is a modern replacement for passwords. Instead of remembering and typing in a password, users simply unlock their device, with “Face ID”, “Touch ID”, “Windows Hello”, a “PIN”, or a “hardware key”.
Even if staff accidentally land on a fake login page, the passkey will not work - it’s like trying the wrong key in the wrong lock.
Why it matters
Safer online accounts as passkeys cannot be stolen through phishing - for now.
No more password headaches: Forget juggling dozens of logins. Instead sign in with a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN.
Unique to every site
Works across devices, such as iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac
Convenient day-to-day for faster sign-ins mean less time wasted and fewer frustrations.
Passkeys benefits are clear: Less wasted time, better protection and stronger compliance.
How passkeys are used
On Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac):
Enable iCloud Keychain.
When prompted on a supported site, choose Add a passkey.
Approve with Face ID, Touch ID, or device password.
On Android/Chrome:
Open Google Password Manager in settings.
Enable passkeys.
Approve with a screen lock or fingerprint when signing in.
On Windows with Windows Hello:
Set up a PIN, fingerprint, or camera login.
Choose Sign in with a passkey when prompted.
Hardware keys:
FIDO2-compatible keys (such as YubiKeys) can be registered on critical business apps.
Admins should always keep a spare for recovery.
Once set up, logging in is as simple as unlocking the device.
Rolling out passkeys in an organisation
seQure recommends businesses take a staged approach:
Begin with critical apps, such as email, file storage, finance systems, and admin consoles.
Pilot with a small group of staff, followed by early adopters. Early adopters can also be used as change champions.
Enable passkey policies in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.
Put recovery steps in place for lost devices.
Train staff using short, plain guides.
Retire weaker login methods like, such as SMS codes, once passkeys are established.
This is not a full implementation strategy, but designed to provide a high level overview.
Key things to remember
Admin accounts should always have at least two passkeys (a device and a hardware key).
Critical systems should always have a break-glass account with set privileges.
Not every app supports passkeys yet, so strong passwords plus 2FA/MFA are still needed in some cases.
Onboarding and offboarding should include setting up and removing passkeys.
Keep a register of which apps support them and who has access for audits and insurance purposes.
